We worked with the staff of the zoo, Go Consessions and Desert Earthworks to replace a barren asphalt and gravel plaza with a place of lingering for the family. To do this we wanted to extend the presence of the African savanna all the way back to the zoo's carousel. An open landscape of wild grasses with seating in a mesquite and acacia bosque was installed with clear paving distinctions for the through routes and lingering areas. Adjustments to grading opened sightlines to the animals of the savannna, bringing them closer to the visitors. Waterways follow the main path to encourage exploration and play. The dining areas now engage the natural environment they are a part of, and the adjacent savanna of african animals. |
