While the master plan for the Phoenix Zoo was in development, the zoo received the generous donation of a carousel. Being one of the few elements in the zoo that likes to be in the middle of everything, it would make an ideal addition to the core area of the zoo to anchor a new entry experience. The lively affect of the carousel required careful placement consideration to avoid the impression of a circus. The plaza was remodeled, replacing the asphalt with colored concrete and repainting the buildings to blend into the surrounding natural elements.
The zoo’s logo colors were artfully incorporated into the carousel’s color palette. Animals found in the zoo were chosen for depiction in the carousel along with a few whimsical creatures to inspire the imagination. The animals were even grouped into collections as they lead the chariot round and round.
The carousel opened for ZooFari 2005 and has been a great success ever since. The lights, music and vivid animals create a light, ethereal atmosphere for the visitors, giving them hints of the wildlife they will experience in the zoo.
