Part of the challenge of customizing a home is choosing accessories that are appropriate to the home's architectural style. The Marley Park team wanted to have some sort of easy style referrence available to their residents for this person. Ideally this referrence would be portable, depict home styles in an easily understood manner, and would not be so strictly designed as to seem limiting to the home owner. Using these criteria, we developed style sheets.
Creating the style sheets was not without its challenges. First, we had to gather enough pictorial referrence to show the distinctions between the styles, and develop a method of stylizing the images so that they provide more of an idea of what the homeowner should look for, as opposed to appearing to be an ad for a particular item. Second, enough different features had to be shown on one page to give the resident a clear idea of what type of feature would fit with their home. Given that the sheets had to cover everything from windows to doors, fences to walls, and fountains to chimineas, this task was quite time consuming.
The end result of this process left us with six style sheets, one for each style of home in Marley Park. The sheets are instantly identifiable from each other thanks to each having a unique, bold color scheme designed to match Marley Park's branding. The images on each sheet serve as prototypes describing what makes each style unique from one another. Overall, they make a valuable resource to homeowners and to Marley Park's design review staff.
