Working with the Seawater Foundation on a master plan for their project in Hermosillo, Mexico offered a unique opportunity for the Espiritu Loci team to look at the landscape on a grand scale. Shrimp farms along the coast of Kino Bay have grown substantially in size and currently threaten the Sea of Cortez ecosystem. The Seawater Foundation project will take the effluent produced by the shrimp farms and put it through miles of man-made seawater canals. These canals provide the infrastructure for an entire seawater landscape, ranging from wild mangrove forests to seawater agricultural fields. This project will turn tens of thousands of hectares of abandoned farmland into an agriculturally productive coastal region. This project is bounded by the proposed federal-coastal highway. As a result, the plan includes several pockets of resorts and coastal homes within the newly-created seawater landscape. |
